Mirra Andreeva and Marta Kostyuk will contest the Mutua Madrid Open final. Both players cleared the semifinal hurdle on Wednesday, each in their own way, to set up a clash nobody predicted at the start of the fortnight.
Andreeva celebrated her nineteenth birthday on Madrid's clay by dispatching Hailey Baptiste 6-4, 7-6(8). The American, who had stunned world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the previous round, gave everything. Baptiste saved three set points in the second set and led 6-4 in the tiebreak before watching Andreeva turn the tide with ice-cold composure. The Russian converted her second match point with a backhand passing shot down the line. Under two hours to reach her first Madrid final, on her birthday no less.
Kostyuk had to weather a storm before finding sunshine. The Ukrainian crushed the opening set 6-2 against Anastasia Potapova, who had become the first lucky loser to reach a WTA 1000 semifinal. Potapova hit back with unexpected ferocity in the second set, inflicting a 6-1 that reset the contest. Kostyuk then rediscovered her striking clarity in the decider, racing to a 6-1 win that extended her winning streak to eleven consecutive matches.
The final pits two remarkable journeys against each other. Andreeva, the ninth seed, navigated the draw without dropping a set until the semifinals. Kostyuk, the twenty-sixth seed, boasts a flawless clay-court record this season. The pair met earlier this year, with the advantage going to Kostyuk.
The WTA draw in Madrid delivered historic chaos this year. Not a single top-eight player reached the semifinals. Sabalenka, Swiatek, Gauff, Rybakina: all eliminated before the final four. Andreeva and Kostyuk capitalized on the upheaval, but they also beat quality opponents to reach this stage.
The final takes place Saturday at the Caja Mágica. For both Andreeva and Kostyuk, it represents a maiden Masters 1000 title. The stakes extend beyond the trophy: a significant ranking boost awaits the winner.
