The 29-year-old Frenchman produced a controlled display against the German clay-court specialist, who had been in strong form throughout the tournament. Halys secured the first set with a decisive break, then held firm in a tight second set before closing out the tiebreak without flinching. Two years after his first ATP final in Gstaad, where he fell to Matteo Berrettini, Halys returns to the championship stage with visible maturity. He will face defending champion Alexander Bublik, the top seed, who dispatched Tomás Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4 in the other semi-final.
In Hamburg, the rematch between Mayar Sherif and Paula Badosa delivered on every level. The Egyptian prevailed in a three-set thriller, 7-6(4), 6-7(2), 6-4, four days after Badosa had retired from their Iasi final. This time, Sherif had the final word, breaking the Spaniard at 4-4 in the decider to seal the win after more than two hours of battle. Sherif faces fourth seed Anna Bondar in the semi-finals after the Hungarian defeated Alina Charaeva 6-1, 7-6(3). In the bottom half, Elina Avanesyan advanced by walkover following the withdrawal of top seed Oleksandra Oliynykova.
At the Prague Open, Barbora Krejcikova, the second seed and reigning Wimbledon champion, booked her semi-final spot by defeating compatriot Dominika Salkova 6-2, 6-4. The day's biggest upset came from fifth seed Tereza Valentova, who overturned top seed Marie Bouzkova 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(6) in a dramatic encounter, saving a match point in the decisive tiebreak. Eighth seed Daria Snigur completed the semi-final lineup with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 win over Lanlana Tararudee.
Friday promises to be thrilling, with the Kitzbühel final between Halys and Bublik, semi-finals in Estoril where Andrey Rublev faces fairy-tale wild card Tiago Torres, and semi-final action in Hamburg and Prague.
