Marta Kostyuk claimed the second WTA singles title of her career with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over fellow Ukrainian Veronika Podrez in the Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole final. The 81-minute triumph sealed the first-ever all-Ukrainian WTA final in tennis history.
Kostyuk controlled the match from start to finish, breaking Podrez's serve six times and finishing with an impressive 34 winners against 23 unforced errors. The first set took barely 30 minutes as the more experienced Ukrainian asserted her dominance early.
The clay-court crown holds special significance for Kostyuk, who had previously collected titles on hard court and grass. She now owns silverware on all three surfaces across singles and doubles, a testament to her versatility at 22 years old. The result should lift her to World No. 23 in the updated rankings.
Podrez, a 19-year-old qualifier making her WTA Tour-level debut, delivered a remarkable run that ended just short of a fairy-tale finish. She became only the third player in two seasons to reach a final on debut. Her trophy ceremony speech in French charmed the Rouen crowd and signaled the arrival of a serious talent.
"This match today was not just a match," Kostyuk said afterward. "It was a historical moment for Ukrainian tennis. For the first time, two Ukrainians played in a WTA final. We have five top-100 players and I hope this match will inspire more kids to try the sport."
While Kostyuk heads to the clay swing with renewed confidence, Podrez is projected to leap to World No. 147, a remarkable rise for a teenager who was outside the top 200 just two weeks ago.
