Thursday shook up the Millennium Estoril Open draw while across the Atlantic, the Mubadala DC Open revealed a star-studded field to kick off the US Open countdown.
In Estoril, the Portuguese clay crowned its local heroes. Jaime Faria, ranked 79th, dispatched second seed Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-4 in a raucous atmosphere at the Estadio Millennium. The Portuguese took control from the opening games, giving the Italian no room to settle. Faria will face Argentina's Burruchaga in the semi-finals after the latter ousted fourth seed Blockx 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
In the top half, Andrey Rublev ended Luca Van Assche's run with a ruthless 6-1, 6-1 display. The Frenchman, who had produced a fine win over Carreno-Busta in the previous round, had no answers to the Russian's power. Rublev has dropped just four games across his last two matches on Portuguese clay and will face wild card Tiago Torres, ranked 427th, in a David-versus-Goliath semi-final.
The semi-final lineup tells the story of the week: Rublev against Torres (the tournament's top seed versus a player making his ATP main-draw debut), Faria against Burruchaga (no seeds left in the bottom half). Estoril has not seen such a shake-up in years.
In Washington, the Mubadala DC Open confirmed a blockbuster field for next week. On the ATP side, Taylor Fritz, Daniil Medvedev, Ben Shelton and defending champion Alex de Minaur will headline a 32-player draw. Jack Draper, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Kei Nishikori received wild cards to round out a compelling field.
On the WTA side, Jessica Pegula will be the top seed in a 28-player draw. Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka and Madison Keys are among the top entries. Venus Williams, 46, received a wild card for what will be one of her final tour appearances, alongside fellow wild card Qinwen Zheng.
The draw ceremony is set for Saturday, with first-round action beginning Monday on hard courts. Washington officially launches the US Open chase. The transition from European clay to North American hard courts promises to be spectacular.
