Arthur Géa Wins Los Cabos for Maiden ATP Title, Enters Top 100

Arthur Géa claimed his maiden ATP title at the Los Cabos Open, defeating defending champion Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-4 in the final. The 21-year-old Frenchman made his top-100 debut, climbing from 127th to 81st in the world rankings, and became the youngest champion in the Mexican tournament's history.

A flawless run in Mexico

Géa left nothing to chance throughout the week. Before facing Shapovalov in the final, he dispatched Soonwoo Kwon, Michael Zheng and Francisco Cerúndolo in succession, all three matches going the distance to three sets, proving his ability to dig himself out of difficult situations. In the semi-finals, he swept past Coleman Wong in straight sets, showing a clear upward trajectory that peaked with a commanding final performance.

The title match showcased the young Frenchman's maturity. Against Shapovalov, the defending champion and eighth seed, Géa displayed remarkable baseline solidity. The 6-3, 6-4 scoreline told the story clearly, with the Canadian never managing to unsettle his opponent. "I didn't know how I would win this week. I was really happy every day to win one more match, one more, then one more. And I have finished with a trophy, so it was an amazing week," Géa said after his victory.

A new wave in French tennis

This title is part of a broader movement reshaping the French tennis landscape. Within two weeks, three Frenchmen have captured maiden ATP titles: Quentin Halys in Kitzbühel, Luca Van Assche in Estoril, and now Arthur Géa in Los Cabos. An unprecedented series that signals a potential changing of the guard after years dominated by Gaël Monfils, Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Géa embodies this transition perfectly. Born on January 2, 2005, he is the sixth player born in 2005 or later to win an ATP title, joining a golden generation gradually seizing control of the tour. Guided since 2025 by coach Gerald Melzer, a former Austrian professional, the Frenchman has built his rise on solid foundations: a Challenger title in Nouméa early in the year, finals in Zadar and Granby, and a standout victory over Jiří Lehečka in the first round of the Australian Open.

A game built to last

Géa's playing style is built on baseline consistency and physical endurance that allow him to grind down opponents. His ability to string together five matches in a single week, including three that went to three sets, speaks to an athletic conditioning well above average for a 21-year-old. With a top-100 ranking and a first title to his name, the Frenchman now has the platform to aim higher on the ATP Tour.

The rest of the season will determine whether Géa can sustain this level at the top. The North American hard-court swing, with the Montreal Masters 1000 and the US Open on the horizon, offers the Frenchman the chance to prove that Los Cabos was no flash in the pan. With a ranking now sufficient to enter main draws at the biggest tournaments directly, Géa has all the tools to continue his rise.

Key numbers

Géa is ranked 81st in the world after this title, his career-best ranking. He won five consecutive matches in Los Cabos, three of which went to three sets. Born in 2005, he is the youngest champion in the tournament's history and the third Frenchman to claim a maiden ATP title within a fortnight.
