Swiatek rolls through Bejlek in under an hour

The seventh seed wasted no time against Bejlek, wrapping up the first set 6-0 in just 20 minutes to set the tone for a thoroughly one-sided affair. The Czech managed to put up more of a fight in the second set, breaking Swiatek's serve once, but the 6-3 scoreline never truly looked in doubt. Swiatek claimed her 24th win of the 2026 season and extended her remarkable collection of WTA 1000 bagels, with only Wuhan now missing from the set. She will face Donna Vekic in the third round after the Croat edged past Golubic.

Svitolina survives 2h40 thriller

Ninth seed Elina Svitolina experienced a very different opening match against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. After dropping the first set in a tiebreak 6-7(5), the Ukrainian staged a gutsy comeback, edging the second set 7-6(4) before pulling away 6-4 in the decider. The 2h40 battle showcased the fighting spirit of the 2023 Wimbledon finalist. Sixteenth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova dispatched Camila Osorio 6-3, 7-6(4), while Donna Vekic needed three sets to see off Viktorija Golubic 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. Top seed Aryna Sabalenka was scheduled to face Moyuka Uchijima in the evening session.

Montreal wraps up first round

On the ATP side, the Montreal draw completed its first-round action. Moutet delivered the most emphatic performance, dismantling Marton Fucsovics 6-1, 6-2 in under an hour, a statement that confirms the Frenchman's growing confidence on North American hard courts. Alex Michelsen continued his strong form with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win over Jan-Lennard Struff, while home favourite Gabriel Diallo thrilled the local crowd by rallying past qualifier Kyrian Jacquet 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-2 after losing the opening set. Marin Cilic, 37, ousted Sho Shimabukuro 7-6(2), 6-1 with the authority of a former Grand Slam champion, and Hubert Hurkacz advanced in three sets against Marcos Giron 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

[Shapovalov](/tennis/players/shapovalov-denis) forced to retire

Denis Shapovalov endured a tough evening in front of his home crowd. After taking the first set 6-4 against Zachary Svajda, the Canadian dropped the second before retiring at 0-3 in the decider due to physical issues. A frustrating exit for the former Wimbledon semifinalist, who has struggled to recapture his best form in recent seasons. The Canadian crowd, hoping for a deep home run from their former prodigy, was left disappointed as Shapovalov's body once again failed to match his ambition.

Key numbers from Tuesday

Swiatek has now won 24 matches in 2026, conceding just three games to Bejlek. Svitolina added another three-set victory to her impressive season resume. In Montreal, all 24 first-round matches are now complete. The 32 seeds enter the draw on Wednesday for the second round, headlined by Alexander Zverev, defending champion Ben Shelton and home favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime.
