The third round of Wimbledon 2026 has produced its biggest earthquake. Alexandra Eala, the 29th seed, stunned defending champion Iga Swiatek in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-2, on Centre Court. A devastating defeat for the Pole, knocked out by a twenty-year-old who has written herself into the history of Philippine tennis.
The first set laid the foundation for the upset. Swiatek, solid on serve, never managed to impose her baseline rhythm. Eala, aggressive from the return, mixed net approaches with length variations that unsettled the world number three. The tiebreak turned at 5-5 on a Swiatek double fault, followed by a magnificent backhand pass from the Filipino to seal it 7-6(5).
The second set left no room for doubt. Eala broke immediately and confirmed with authority, producing tennis of striking maturity for a twenty-year-old. Her cross-court forehand, the primary weapon in her arsenal, wreaked havoc: 23 winners in total against just 11 unforced errors. Swiatek finished with 27 unforced errors, an unusually high number for a player of her calibre.
"I don't even realise what just happened," Eala said courtside, tears in her eyes. "Playing on Centre Court against the defending champion is a dream. Winning is beyond anything I had imagined." The Filipino becomes the first player from her country to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam.
Swiatek, visibly shaken, acknowledged her opponent's superiority. "She played incredible tennis, I couldn't find any solutions. On grass, when someone plays that well at the net, it becomes very difficult," the Pole analysed after her London run ended prematurely for the second consecutive year.
Eala will face the winner of the Madison Keys vs Anisimova match in the fourth round. Regardless of the outcome, the Filipino has already left her mark on this Wimbledon.
