Fonseca Withdraws from Cincinnati with Abdominal Injury, US Open in Doubt

Pain surfaced during practice

The withdrawal came after a training session on Monday. "During practice, I felt slight discomfort on the left side of my abdomen," Fonseca said in a statement. "After undergoing tests, my team and I decided to withdraw from the Cincinnati Open to recover as quickly as possible." The exact severity of the injury has not been disclosed, though initial assessments suggest a minor issue.

A breakthrough season suddenly disrupted

The timing could hardly be worse for the Brazilian prodigy. Fonseca was enjoying his best season on the main tour with a 19-13 record, quarter-final runs at Monte-Carlo, the BMW Open in Munich, and Roland-Garros. A former US Open junior champion in 2023, he reached the second round at Flushing Meadows last year and appeared poised for a deeper run at the Grand Slam this time around.

At the Canadian Open the previous week, Fonseca fell in the third round to Ben Shelton, the eventual champion, proving he could compete with the best on hard courts. That momentum has now been interrupted twelve days before the US Open.

A race against time for New York

The first round of the season's final Grand Slam begins on August 30. Fonseca has just under two weeks to recover. An abdominal injury, even a minor one, is a delicate matter for a player whose game relies on a powerful serve and heavy groundstrokes. The Brazilian has not raised concerns about his US Open participation, but the timeline is tight.

Fonseca joins a growing list of players nursing injuries ahead of the US Open. Carlos Alcaraz, sidelined since April with a wrist injury, has yet to confirm his participation. Jannik Sinner, troubled by a knee problem, also missed the entire North American swing. Sebastian Korda withdrew after back surgery. The 2026 season, marked by a significant rise in injuries according to the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), continues to take its toll as the New York showpiece approaches.
