Jódar Reaches Montreal Quarterfinals: 19-Year-Old Spaniard Eyes Top 10 After Dismissing Lehecka

Rafael Jódar dispatched eighth seed Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-3 in the Round of 16 at the Canadian Open in Montreal on Saturday. The 19-year-old Spaniard has now reached his third consecutive Masters 1000 quarterfinal, following Madrid and Rome earlier this season. A title in Montreal would propel him into the ATP top 10 for the first time in his career.

A masterclass in maturity

Jódar gave Lehecka no chance. The Spaniard seized control as early as the third game with a break earned through a backhand return winner, then never relinquished his lead. The second set followed the same pattern: an early break followed by rock-solid serving, with no break points conceded across his final four service games. The match lasted just 68 minutes, the mark of a player who knows exactly when to push and when to manage.

Three M1000 quarterfinals at 19

Jódar's 2026 season tells the story of a future elite player emerging in real time. A maiden title at Marrakech in April, a semifinal in Barcelona, a quarterfinal in Madrid where he upset Alex de Minaur, a quarterfinal in Rome where he became the youngest player to reach the last eight in 21 years. In Montreal, he has added victories over Lorenzo Musetti and Lehecka, two players with far deeper resumes than his own. The third-ranked Spaniard behind Carlos Alcaraz and Pablo Carreño Busta, Jódar embodies the next wave of Iberian tennis talent.

Fils vs Jódar, a generational showdown in the quarterfinals

Jódar will face 18th seed Arthur Fils, who beat Cameron Norrie 6-2, 7-6(8) in the other fourth-round match in their section. The 21-year-old Frenchman and the 19-year-old Spaniard are set to deliver a quarterfinal between two of the most exciting young talents on tour. The winner will reach the semifinal of a Masters 1000 in a draw missing Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev, a golden opportunity to make a statement.
