Roland-Garros Day 1: Zverev dominant, Kostyuk emotional, Cinà makes history

The opening day of the Roland-Garros 2026 main draw delivered drama, emotion and breakthrough performances across the Parisian clay courts.

Alexander Zverev, the second seed, set the tone early. The German dismantled home favourite Benjamin Bonzi 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and eight minutes, sending a clear statement to the rest of the draw. Zverev's pursuit of a maiden Grand Slam title began with clinical precision.

The most moving victory of the day belonged to Marta Kostyuk. The 15th seed defeated Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-2, 6-3, but the match unfolded against a devastating backdrop. Hours before stepping on court, a Russian missile struck a building approximately 100 metres from her parents' home in Kyiv. "This morning, 100 metres from my parents' house, a missile destroyed a building," Kostyuk revealed afterwards. Despite the news, the 23-year-old never considered withdrawing. She extended her clay-court winning streak to 13 consecutive matches in 2026.

The standout story of Day 1, however, was Federico Cinà. The 19-year-old Italian qualifier, ranked 238th in the world, stunned Reilly Opelka 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-4 in three hours and twenty-six minutes. At 5-4 in the fifth set, Cinà saved three break points to seal the biggest win of his young career. He becomes the second youngest Italian to win a match at Roland-Garros, after Jannik Sinner.

Emma Raducanu suffered a first-round exit, falling to Argentina's Solana Sierra 0-6, 6-7(4). The Briton, playing her first clay-court match of the season after a viral illness, never found her rhythm. Belinda Bencic, seeded 11th, safely navigated her opener against Austrian qualifier Sinja Kraus 6-2, 6-3.

Caty McNally produced the comeback of the day, rallying from 6-3, 3-0 down against Ajla Tomljanovic to win 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-3. Karen Khachanov, the 13th seed, eased through 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-0 against Frenchman Arthur Gea.
