Sabalenka withdraws from Stuttgart after historic Sunshine Double

The news broke on Thursday evening and sent shockwaves through the women's tour. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will not compete at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart next week. The Belarusian, fresh off a stunning Sunshine Double, has revealed she is nursing an injury sustained in the aftermath of her Miami triumph.

On March 28, Sabalenka lifted the trophy at Hard Rock Stadium following a grueling final against Coco Gauff, winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. That victory made her just the fifth woman in the Open Era to sweep Indian Wells and Miami in the same season, joining an exclusive club alongside Steffi Graf, Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka and Iga Swiatek. But the grueling campaign appears to have taken its toll.

Without revealing the exact nature of her injury, the three-time Grand Slam champion said she was "very sad" to miss a tournament where she has reached four finals. "I tried everything to be ready, but my body needs time," she stated in a release shared by the WTA.

Sabalenka's absence reshuffles the deck in Stuttgart. Elena Rybakina inherits the top seed in a draw that remains stacked, with Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff also in the field. The event had already lost Zheng Qinwen earlier in the week, replaced by Filipino-Spanish rising star Alex Eala.

For Sabalenka, the priority now shifts to recovery ahead of the clay-court swing's marquee events. She has confirmed she is targeting the Mutua Madrid Open in late April, followed by Rome and Roland-Garros. At 28, the Belarusian is enjoying the finest stretch of her career and has no intention of risking her fitness.

The WTA 500 in Stuttgart, played indoors on clay from April 13-19, remains one of spring's most anticipated stops. Defending champion Jelena Ostapenko, who stunned Sabalenka in last year's final, will look to retain her crown against fierce competition. Rybakina, riding high after a strong start to the season, emerges as the logical favorite in the absence of the world No. 1.

Whether this withdrawal signals careful calendar management or a genuine physical setback remains to be seen. The coming weeks will provide the answer.
