Mattia Bellucci keeps turning heads in Stuttgart. The Italian defeated home favorite Yannick Hanfmann 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-2 on Tuesday to reach his first ATP quarter-final on grass at the BOSS Open.
Two days after ousting seventh seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (6-2, 6-7(5), 6-1), Bellucci once again demonstrated his ability to raise his level in crucial moments. Against Hanfmann, backed by the local crowd, he weathered a tight second set before pulling away decisively in the third.
The young Italian's run highlights a remarkable adaptation to grass, a surface where he had limited ATP-level experience. His attacking game, built around a powerful first serve and well-timed net approaches, appears tailor-made for the fast surface.
In the quarter-finals, Bellucci could face defending champion or rising star Martin Landaluce, who claimed his first grass-court win at tour level on Monday against Pierre-Hugues Herbert (5-7, 6-3, 6-4). An enticing matchup awaits regardless of the outcome on the other side of the draw.
The BOSS Open features a strong field this season with top seed Ben Shelton and Nick Kyrgios, who reminded everyone of his grass-court prowess on Monday by dispatching Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-4.
