Where to find good tennis statistics
No single site does everything well. Live score platforms are unbeatable on speed and thin on context. Historical databases are remarkably deep and deliberately austere. What you should use depends on what you are actually looking for.
This page is published by ScoreShark, which appears in the comparison. Worth saying up front: we have a stake in this. We tried to write what we wanted to read before building the site, and we say where others do it better.
Three needs people keep confusing
"Tennis statistics" covers three very different requests, which is why people often walk away disappointed from a perfectly good site. Knowing the current score of a live match has nothing to do with understanding why a player keeps losing on clay.
| Need | What it takes | Who does it well |
|---|---|---|
| Following a live match | Low latency, broad coverage, mobile app | The large live platforms (Flashscore, Sofascore) |
| Checking an official ranking | Primary source, weekly updates | The ATP and WTA sites |
| Digging through deep history | Raw data, filters, exports | Tennis Abstract and the Jeff Sackmann archive |
| Understanding an upcoming match | Contextualised H2H, recent form, editorial reading | That is what ScoreShark is for |
Head-to-head is the most requested and worst served number
A bare head-to-head record says almost nothing. "3-1" is meaningless if the three wins came in 2019 on hard courts and the loss came last month on clay. Most sites stop at the number, because it fits in a table and generates itself.
What is missing nearly everywhere: the surface of each meeting, its date, the tournament context, and how both players were playing at the time. Our player comparison pages start there.
What ScoreShark does, and what it does not
We are an analysis publication. We write argued editorial opinions on tour matches, with a publicly visible accuracy history: every past analysis is marked correct or incorrect once the match ends, with no way to remove it afterwards.
What we do not do: second-by-second live coverage. Ours exists but does not compete with infrastructure refined over fifteen years, and claiming otherwise would be dishonest. If you want to follow a match point by point, the large platforms remain the right choice. We are also not a gambling operator, and none of our analyses constitutes betting advice.
Some of our analyses are reserved for subscribers. The public data — player profiles, tournaments, rankings and head-to-head records — stays available without an account.
Reading a head-to-head record without fooling yourself
Four habits prevent the most common misreadings. Date the meetings first: a record built before 2022 describes two players who no longer exist. Then split by surface, because 4-0 on hard courts tells you nothing about a grass match.
Look at the format too. Best-of-five at a Grand Slam and best-of-three at an ATP 250 do not reward the same qualities. Finally, treat small samples with suspicion: under five meetings, a record owes as much to chance as to any real gap between the players.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best tennis statistics site?
- It depends on the need. For live scores, the large platforms remain the fastest. For official rankings, the ATP and WTA sites are authoritative. For deep history, the Jeff Sackmann archive and Tennis Abstract are the references. For understanding an upcoming match with a contextualised head-to-head, that is what ScoreShark is for.
- How do you read a head-to-head record?
- Date the meetings, split them by surface, take the match format into account and treat small samples with suspicion. Under five meetings, a head-to-head record owes as much to chance as to any real gap between the two players.
- Are ScoreShark statistics free?
- Public data is available without an account: player profiles, tournaments, rankings, results and head-to-head records. Editorial match analyses are reserved for subscribers, except for one analysis offered every day.
- Is ScoreShark a betting site?
- No. ScoreShark is a sports analysis and statistics publication, produced for informational purposes. No analysis constitutes betting advice or an incitement to gamble, and ScoreShark is not a licensed gambling operator.
