ATP semifinals: Tsitsipas-Collignon final set in Gstaad, Rublev rolls in Bastad

Saturday July 18 delivered a full slate of semifinals across the ATP 250 circuit, with clay-court action in Switzerland, Sweden and Croatia. Three tournaments, three storylines, and Sunday finals taking shape.

Gstaad: Tsitsipas steady, Collignon heroic

The Swiss Open in Gstaad produced the most memorable day of the three. Stefanos Tsitsipas booked his spot in the final by beating Alexander Shevchenko 7-6(5), 6-3. The Greek, who is rediscovering his best clay-court form after a difficult stretch, commanded the first-set tiebreak before cruising through the second.

But it was the other semifinal that stole the show. Raphaël Collignon, ranked 42nd in the world at 24 years old, produced the comeback of the week against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Down 6-1, 5-3, the Belgian saved a match point before turning the match around to win 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5. Sunday's final will pit the Greek's experience against the Belgian's fearlessness, in what promises to be a fascinating clash on the Bernese Oberland clay.

Bastan: Rublev on a mission

Andrey Rublev continues to cruise through the Nordea Open in Bastad. After demolishing Sebastian Baez 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinal, the Russian faced Alejandro Tabilo in Saturday's semifinal. The Chilean, who advanced via Thiago Agustín Tirante's walkover in the quarters, needed to find the resources to match Rublev's relentless pace as the Russian chases a clay title that has eluded him this season. The other semifinal featured Luciano Darderi against Adolfo Daniel Vallejo.

Umag: the outsiders take charge

The Croatia Open in Umag has been a tournament of surprises. After top seed Flavio Cobolli was eliminated in the first round by Burruchaga, the underdogs have taken control of the draw. Saturday evening's semifinals pitted Burruchaga against Merida and Dzumhur against Molcan, four players none of whom were among the pre-tournament favourites.

The post-Wimbledon landscape is taking shape: while the tour's heavyweights enjoy a well-earned break, these clay-court ATP 250 events provide a valuable stage for players chasing points and confidence ahead of the American hard-court swing.
