Fonseca stuns Tsitsipas in Montreal: Canadian Open Wednesday recap

João Fonseca pulled off the upset of the day at the Canadian Open on Wednesday, knocking out Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 7-5 in the second round. The 22nd-seeded Brazilian, 19, was playing his first hard-court match since a third-round loss at Wimbledon last month. He became the first player from his country to reach the third round of the Canadian Masters 1000 since Gustavo Kuerten.

Fonseca dominates tiebreak, Tsitsipas fumes over surface

The opening set went to a tiebreak, where Fonseca produced a clinical performance to take it 7-3. Sharp on serve and aggressive on return, the young Brazilian controlled the rallies against a Tsitsipas who struggled to find his rhythm in extended exchanges. The second set delivered even more drama: Fonseca broke to lead 5-4 and served for the match, only to drop serve under pressure from the Greek. Unfazed, he won eight of the next nine points to seal a 7-5 second set in a high-intensity finish.

Tsitsipas did not hide his frustration during the match. The Greek confronted the chair umpire mid-game to complain about the court surface: "Do you see the bounce? It looks like a public court. We're in a Masters 1000. What are we doing?" The umpire inspected the area and concluded there was no visible defect. A reaction that spoke to the frustration of a player who never found his footing against the power and composure of his young opponent.

Shelton keeps title defence on track, Ruud cruises

Defending champion Ben Shelton, the fifth seed, dispatched fellow American Jenson Brooksby 6-3, 7-5 to book his place in the third round. Shelton controlled the baseline exchanges and leaned on his powerful serve throughout, although Brooksby made things competitive in the second set before the champion pulled away. His title defence remains firmly on course.

Casper Ruud, seeded ninth, delivered the most dominant display of the day by dismantling Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-1, 6-2. The Norwegian converted five of seven break points in a match that lasted barely over an hour. Ruud will face Fonseca in the third round, a clash that promises to pit experience against youthful audacity.

Musetti advances, Norrie steady

Eleventh seed Lorenzo Musetti had to grind through a tight opening set before finding his range against Colombian qualifier Nicolas Mejia, prevailing 7-6(8), 6-2 after a tense tiebreak. Cameron Norrie dispatched Ignacio Buse 6-3, 6-3 in a straightforward encounter.

Navone and Bergs author comeback wins

Mariano Navone produced the most dramatic turnaround of the day, eliminating 14th seed Valentin Vacherot 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Blown off the court in the first set, the Argentine found tactical solutions to shift the momentum from the second set onwards. Belgian Zizou Bergs, the 31st seed, authored a similar fightback against Sebastian Baez, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 after a poor opening set. Nuno Borges completed the day's results by ousting 26th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-4, 6-2.

Key numbers and Thursday preview

Eight second-round matches were decided on Wednesday in Montreal, with five seeded players advancing and three upsets. The third round features a tantalizing Fonseca-Ruud matchup, while Shelton continues his title defence. With Alexander Zverev as the top seed and Jannik Sinner absent from the draw, the 2026 Canadian Open remains wide open.
