Géa reaches Los Cabos final, breaks into ATP top 100

Arthur Géa, 21, qualified for his first ATP final by defeating Coleman Wong 7-6(7), 6-3 in the semifinals of the Los Cabos Open on Saturday. The Frenchman, currently ranked No. 127, is guaranteed to break into the world top 100 on Monday, a new career high for the Carpentras native.

An improbable journey to Mexico

Géa's path to the Los Cabos final reads like a logistical fairy tale. Originally entered in the Bloomfield Hills Challenger after reaching the final at the Granby Challenger, the Frenchman saw his plans derailed by a cascade of travel disruptions. A damaged Air Canada aircraft, weather-related cancellations: reaching Michigan with his luggage proved impossible. He and his coach pivoted to Los Cabos instead, where a series of player withdrawals opened a spot in the main draw. "Air Canada told us on Sunday evening that the plane wouldn't be taking off," Géa explained (Tennis Majors). A last-minute decision that turned into a golden opportunity.

A commanding semifinal against Wong

Géa produced a solid and mature display against Hong Kong's Coleman Wong. The opening set was fought point by point until the tiebreak, where the Frenchman made the difference at 7-6(7) with superior composure in the clutch moments. Freed by that tight opener, Géa accelerated in the second set to close out 6-3 with authority. At 21 years and six months, he becomes the sixth Frenchman to reach an ATP final in 2026, confirming the remarkable depth of French tennis on the professional tour.

Shapovalov, the defending champion, awaits in Sunday's final

Géa will face Denis Shapovalov, the eighth seed and defending champion, in Sunday's final. The Canadian, ranked No. 68, defeated fifth seed Cameron Norrie 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in the other semifinal. Having won the title on his tournament debut in 2025, Shapovalov is targeting a historic back-to-back double in Mexico. For Géa, it will be a first meeting against a former Wimbledon semifinalist, a true test of his progress at the highest level.

Key figures

Géa is guaranteed to enter the top 100 on Monday, a new personal best. His 2026 season includes a Challenger title in Nouméa, a Grand Slam main draw debut at the Australian Open with a victory over Jiří Lehečka, then ranked No. 19, and now a first ATP final. At Los Cabos, he has strung together four victories in as many matches to reach his first final on the main tour.
