Hamburg and RG Qualifying: Cobolli Falls, Humbert Survives

A busy day on the tour, with the Hamburg Open gathering momentum and Roland-Garros qualifying entering its decisive phase. Here is the full recap from May 19.

In Hamburg, the biggest surprise came on center court. Flavio Cobolli, the fourth seed, was swept aside by Peru's Ignacio Buse 6-2, 7-5 in the second round. The Italian never found his rhythm against an inspired opponent.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, the top seed, cruised past Vit Kopriva (7-5, 6-1), confirming his strong current form. Ugo Humbert needed three sets to get past Germany's Justin Engel (6-3, 3-6, 7-6), while Karen Khachanov also fought through in three against Hugo Gaston (3-6, 6-3, 7-6). Two gutsy wins that send the Frenchman and the Russian into the quarterfinals.

In the round of 16, Daniel Altmaier pulled off the upset of the day, knocking out second seed Ben Shelton 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4. The German turned the match around after dropping the opening set.

At Roland-Garros qualifying, Day 2 delivered its share of drama. The headline result was Grigor Dimitrov's exit at the hands of Portugal's Jaime Faria, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(10-6), in a gripping super tiebreak. For Dimitrov, ranked 170th in the world, it marks the first time since 2010 that he will miss the main draw at the Parisian Grand Slam.

On the WTA side in Strasbourg, Leylah Fernandez overcame Magdalena Frech in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-4), Victoria Mboko confirmed her seeding by dispatching Lois Boisson (6-4, 6-3), and Peyton Stearns continued her run with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 win over Daria Kasatkina.
