Kristina Liutova, 16, has won the Memphis Classic 2026 by defeating Darja Vidmanova 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 in Saturday's final on August 2. The Russian becomes the youngest WTA champion since Coco Gauff won Linz in 2019 at age 15 and the first player born in the 2010s to lift a trophy on the professional tour.
A spectacular comeback after a one-sided opening set
Vidmanova, 21 and ranked 95th in the world, dominated the first set 6-1 with powerful baseline play. Liutova appeared overwhelmed by the occasion of her very first WTA final. The turning point came between sets. The Russian drew on the advice her mother had been repeating all week: "just play the tennis you want to play." From the second set onward, she seized control of the rallies and found greater depth in her groundstrokes. Liutova reeled off nine consecutive games spanning the final two sets, breaking Vidmanova's serve four straight times. The second set, won 6-1, was the mirror image of the first. The third confirmed her control with an early break and a clean 6-3 finish.
A qualifier nobody saw coming
"It's a kind of miracle journey," Liutova said after the trophy ceremony (Tennis Majors). A qualifier ranked 229th before the tournament and 714th in January, she was making her very first WTA main-draw appearance in Memphis. To reach the final, she dispatched top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the opening round, then Australian Maya Joint in three sets, sixth seed Caty McNally 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, and Elvina Kalieva 7-5, 6-1 in the semifinals. Five victories, three top-100 players eliminated, and just one set dropped before the final. Liutova joins Maria Timofeeva (Budapest 2023) as the most recent player to win a WTA title on her main-draw debut. She is the third teenager to claim a title this season after Mirra Andreeva and Lilli Tagger. When Monday's rankings are released, the Russian is projected to leap to around 130th in the world, a jump of nearly one hundred places in a single week.
