Aryna Sabalenka left no room for doubt. Facing Naomi Osaka in the fourth round at Roland-Garros, the world number one prevailed 7-5, 6-3 in just 87 minutes, reaching her 14th consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final in the process.
The opening games hinted at a different storyline. Osaka broke early to lead 2-0, dictating play with her heavy groundstrokes on the Parisian clay. But Sabalenka quickly regained control and never faced another break point for the remainder of the match.
The numbers tell the story: 12 aces, 39 winners, 10 out of 11 net points won. The Belarusian also produced five clean drop shot winners that left Osaka stranded on the baseline, a display of tactical variety on a surface where Sabalenka keeps improving year after year.
For Osaka, this Roland-Garros will nonetheless be remembered positively. After difficult months, the Japanese star had reached the fourth round in Paris for the first time in her career, confirming her upward trajectory on clay. Losing to the best player in the world does not diminish that progress.
This was Sabalenka's third win over Osaka this season, a comprehensive dominance in the rivalry between two former world number ones. In the quarter-finals, the Belarusian will face Diana Shnaider, who upset Madison Keys, for a spot in the semi-finals.
