A run that demands attention
Sherif has now won sixteen of her last seventeen matches. In four weeks, she has claimed three titles from four tournaments, catapulting her ranking from 129th to 55th in the world. A stunning rise for the twenty-eight-year-old, who had struggled with anxiety issues earlier in the season.
The match against Badosa showcased this newfound mental strength. Trailing in the first-set tiebreak, Sherif turned it around to take it 7-4. After losing the second set in a lopsided breaker, she found the resources to break in the third set and close it out 6-4. She saved eleven of eighteen break points she faced, a number that speaks to her composure under pressure.
Badosa committed twelve double faults, an unusual total for the Spaniard who had arrived on a nine-match clay-court winning streak with titles in Bastad and Iasi. The world number 82 matched Sherif in rally intensity, but her serving errors proved too costly at the critical moments.
This marks Sherif's second victory over Badosa in a matter of days. In the Iasi final last Sunday, the Spaniard had been forced to retire with a leg injury while the match hung in the balance. This time the contest went the distance, with the same outcome.
Sherif will face German Tamara Korpatsch in the semifinals on Saturday. Korpatsch, the fifth seed and local favourite, defeated second seed Anhelina Kalinina 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 to reach her first semifinal on home soil.
