Sinner and Djokovic withdraw from Montreal, top 3 all absent

Tennis Canada confirmed on Friday that Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic have withdrawn from the Montreal Masters 1000, scheduled from August 2 to 13. With Carlos Alcaraz already out due to a right wrist injury announced last week, the three most anticipated players on tour will all miss the Canadian event.

Sinner defended his Wimbledon title two weeks ago, beating Alexander Zverev in four sets in the final. The world number 1 will not compete again until Cincinnati on August 10, taking nearly a month away from competition. "I look forward to returning to Montreal in the future," the Italian said in a statement, without specifying the exact reason for his withdrawal.

Sinner's break puts on hold a historic Masters 1000 streak. Since his Paris victory last October, the Italian has won thirty-four consecutive matches at Masters level, collecting six straight titles. In 2026, he holds a perfect thirty-win, zero-loss record at Masters 1000 events, a level of dominance the tour has not seen since Djokovic's peak years.

For the Serbian, the withdrawal fits a carefully managed 2026 schedule. Djokovic, knocked out in the Wimbledon semi-finals by Sinner, has limited his appearances this season to focus on the biggest events. His absence from Montreal is not unexpected, but it deprives the draw of a five-time former champion.

The National Bank Open therefore loses its three headline attractions. Zverev, the Wimbledon finalist and solid world number 2, is expected to become the top seed. The tournament should still be compelling, with players like Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz well positioned to make deep runs.

The North American swing begins in unusual fashion. For the first time in recent memory, Sinner will defend no Masters 1000 points before Cincinnati, where he will look to extend his record streak. For the rest of the field, Montreal offers a rare window to claim a title without facing the top three.
