Tirante in Montreal: the Argentine Toppling Seeds at the Canadian Open

Thiago Agustín Tirante produced the finest result of his season at the Canadian Open in Montreal, defeating Taylor Fritz 7-5, 6-3 in the second round. The 25-year-old Argentine, ranked around 60th in the world, recorded his third career victory over a top-10 player, confirming his growing credentials on fast surfaces.

An untouchable serve against Fritz

The match lasted just 87 minutes and Tirante was never broken across all ten of his service games. The left-handed Argentine struck 19 winners and lost only one point behind his first serve, a staggering 25 out of 26. Fritz, the seventh seed and fresh off his title in Washington, failed to convert a single break point. The American accumulated just 53 points to Tirante's 73, a gap that underscored the Argentine's dominance in the rallies. Fritz, visibly hampered physically, called for a trainer during the second set and was unable to move freely in the closing games, conceding five love games on the Tirante serve.

From La Plata to the world top 60

Born in La Plata on April 10, 2001, Tirante finished 2019 as the world's number one junior, winning three consecutive late-season titles (Yucatan Cup, Eddie Herr, Orange Bowl) without dropping a single set across his final 26 sets. That junior dominance suggested a rapid rise to the top, but his transition to the professional ranks proved more gradual. He broke into the top 200 in 2022, then the top 100 in 2024, before reaching his career-high ranking of 58th in the world in May 2026, powered by strong runs at Madrid (third round) and Rome (fourth round).

Six Challenger titles on clay

His success on clay comes as no surprise for an Argentine raised on the surface. Six Challenger titles dot his resume, from Ambato in 2021 to Córdoba and Szczecin in 2025. Tirante built his game on the patience and consistency that define the Argentine school, with a solid two-handed backhand and the ability to extend rallies. But it is on hard courts where the left-hander from La Plata has elevated his game this season. Before Montreal, he had won just three matches on fast surfaces in 2026, a modest record that makes his upset of Fritz all the more striking.

Third career top-10 scalp

The victory over Fritz fits into a pattern of standout performances against the tour's elite. Tirante defeated Andrey Rublev, then ranked eighth, in the semifinals at Bastad in 2024, followed by Ben Shelton, ninth in the world, at Houston in 2026. All three victories share a common thread: a near-unbreakable serve and impressive mental fortitude in decisive moments. The Argentine continues his run in a draw decimated by withdrawals and upsets. The absence of Sinner, Alcaraz, Zverev and Medvedev opens unprecedented opportunities for players of his caliber.

Season numbers at a glance

Tirante holds a 23-18 win-loss record in 2026, with his best Masters 1000 result being a fourth-round appearance in Rome. His current ranking positions him to push for the top 50 by year's end if his hard-court form continues at the Canadian Open and beyond. At 25, the Argentine is entering the prime years of his career, and Montreal could prove to be the tournament that establishes him as a genuine threat on all surfaces.
