Venus Williams' Losing Streak Reaches 10 After Madrid First-Round Exit

Venus Williams suffered another first-round defeat at the Mutua Madrid Open, falling 6-2, 6-4 to Spanish wildcard Kaitlin Quevedo. The 45-year-old former world No. 1 has now lost 10 consecutive matches, a record no previous WTA rankings leader has endured since the system was established in 1975.

Playing on Court Manolo Santana in gusty conditions, Quevedo showed remarkable composure for a 20-year-old ranked 479th in the world competing in her first WTA 1000 main draw. She broke Williams three times in the opening set, exposing the American's rust on clay, a surface she hadn't competed on since Roland Garros 2021.

Williams briefly turned back the clock in the second set, racing to a 3-0 lead with flashes of her trademark forehand power. A rain delay forced the roof closed, however, and the momentum shifted decisively. Quevedo reeled off five straight games to seal the match in one hour and 45 minutes.

Seven matches played in 2026, seven losses. The uncomfortable question surrounding the seven-time Grand Slam champion grows louder with every defeat. Williams hasn't won a match since September 2025. Madrid may have been her final clay-court appearance. Quevedo, meanwhile, advances to the second round with a memory that will last a lifetime.
