Wimbledon Day 9: Gauff in semis, Zverev through, big evening ahead

The first day of quarter-finals at Wimbledon 2026 started with a bang. Coco Gauff opened proceedings with a three-set victory over Jessica Pegula (4-6, 6-3, 7-5), earning her maiden semi-final on London's grass. The twenty-two-year-old American showed remarkable composure to turn around a match that had started badly.

Earlier in the day, Alexander Zverev wrapped up his fourth-round match against Jiri Lehecka, which had been suspended on Monday night due to curfew. The German second seed had led two sets to love and 3-3 in the third when play was halted. Zverev made short work of the resumption on Tuesday morning: 6-4, 7-5, 6-3. A controlled victory that sends him into the quarter-finals, where he will face Flavio Cobolli, the ninth seed who eliminated Alex de Minaur. A clash between the 2024 Roland-Garros finalist and one of the breakout stories of the grass-court season.

Centre Court hosts the most eagerly anticipated women's clash in the evening session: Naomi Osaka, riding high after her stunning upset of Aryna Sabalenka in the previous round, takes on Karolina Muchova, the tenth seed and the most unpredictable player on tour. Muchova, who knocked out defending champion Barbora Krejcikova, has guaranteed that a new champion will be crowned at Wimbledon this year. Her varied game, mixing devastating drop shots with bold net approaches, promises a tactical feast against Osaka's raw power.

On the men's side, the evening offers two headline attractions. Jannik Sinner, the top seed and tournament favourite, faces Jan-Lennard Struff on Centre Court. The Italian has yet to drop a set, but the thirty-six-year-old German, who defeated Hubert Hurkacz, possesses a serve capable of unsettling anyone on grass. On Court No. 1, Novak Djokovic, seven-time champion and all-time Wimbledon singles wins leader with 106, meets Félix Auger-Aliassime, the third seed, in a generational showdown that could prove the Serbian's last great Centre Court battle.

Wednesday will complete the quarter-final schedule with the remaining two matches. Dimitrov against Fery, the veteran versus the British sensation, and Cobolli against Zverev, Italian flair versus German firepower. The semi-final picture is taking shape, and Wimbledon 2026 continues to cement its status as the most open tournament of the decade.
