WTA Stuttgart: Elite Field Minus Sabalenka Opens Clay Swing

The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix opens its doors on Monday in Stuttgart, officially launching the WTA clay-court season. But the first surprise came before a ball was struck: world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, the original top seed, withdrew due to an injury sustained during her historic Sunshine Double (via wtatennis.com).

Sabalenka's absence reshapes the tournament. Elena Rybakina, elevated to the top seed, faces Tamara Korpatsch or Diana Shnaider in her first clay-court outing of the season. The Kazakh, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, has never excelled on this surface but arrives in Stuttgart brimming with confidence after a strong start to the year.

In the top half, Iga Swiatek returns to familiar territory. The four-time Roland-Garros champion opens against Laura Siegemund or Magdalena Frech, with a potential quarterfinal clash against sixth seed Mirra Andreeva. Swiatek, ranked third in the world, won Stuttgart in 2022 and knows the Porsche Arena's indoor conditions intimately.

Coco Gauff, the second seed, occupies the bottom half and begins against Antonia Ruzic or Liudmila Samsonova. The young American could face seventh seed Karolina Muchova, a formidable clay-court operator, as early as the quarterfinals, a match that would promise high-caliber tennis between two players with complementary styles.

The absences extend beyond Sabalenka. Zheng Qinwen, Anna Kalinskaya, and Barbora Krejcikova have all pulled out (via wtatennis.com). A cluster of withdrawals that reflects the calendar's intensity as the indoor season gives way to the spring clay-court campaign.

Stuttgart holds a unique place on the WTA calendar. This WTA 500 event, played indoors on clay, a singular combination on tour, traditionally serves as a springboard toward Madrid, Rome, and Roland-Garros. Playing conditions, with a lower bounce and faster exchanges than outdoor clay, favor aggressive players who can take the ball early.

The 2026 draw offers potentially spectacular quarterfinal matchups. A possible Rybakina-Swiatek semifinal would rank among the most anticipated clay-court clashes of the season, while Gauff will look to prove she can contend for the biggest titles on every surface.

Main draw play begins Monday, April 13, with the final scheduled for Sunday, April 19.
