Anisimova withdraws from Rome, third consecutive tournament pullout

The nightmare continues for Amanda Anisimova. The world No. 6 pulled out of the Italian Open on Thursday, just hours before her scheduled second-round match against Jelena Ostapenko, citing a left wrist injury that has plagued her for weeks.

It marks the third straight tournament withdrawal for the 24-year-old American. After pulling out of Charleston in late March and Madrid in early May, Rome now joins the growing list. Each time, the pattern repeats: arrival on site, promising practice sessions, then a last-minute pullout that leaves her team searching for answers.

The wrist injury, first sustained during the Miami tournament, refuses to heal. Anisimova has not played a competitive match since Indian Wells in March, nearly two months ago. For a player who started 2026 with a bang, reaching the Australian Open semifinals, the timing could not be worse.

The big question now is Roland-Garros. The French Grand Slam begins in just over two weeks, and the American has not played a single match on clay this season. Even if she recovers in time, the lack of match play on the surface could severely hamper her hopes in Paris.

Elena Gabriela Ruse enters the draw as a lucky loser. Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed on the women's side, sees her section of the draw open up further.
