Eve of Roland-Garros: Ruud, Tien, De Minaur and Buse Reach Semifinals

Forty-eight hours before the first ball is struck at Roland-Garros, the final warm-up tournaments deliver their last act. Geneva and Hamburg hold their semifinals on Friday, with matchups that outline the current state of play on clay.

In Geneva, Casper Ruud faces Mariano Navone for a place in the final. The top seed has not dropped a set all week and appears to be peaking at the perfect moment. His consistency on clay needs no introduction, having reached the Roland-Garros final in 2022. Navone, ranked 28th, will try to disrupt the Norwegian's well-oiled machine with his aggressive baseline game.

The other Geneva semifinal pits Alexander Bublik against Learner Tien in a fascinating clash of styles. Bublik the unpredictable artist against the twenty-year-old American lefty who keeps climbing the rankings. Tien eliminated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals, a result that left the Greek unseeded at a Grand Slam for the first time since 2018. The young Californian, now a Top 20 member, seems unfazed by any opponent.

In Hamburg, the semifinal lineup tells two very different stories. Alex De Minaur meets Tommy Paul in a clash between established top-15 players. The Australian cruised through his quarterfinal against Luciano Darderi with a 6-0, 6-3 demolition in just over an hour. Paul had to work harder against Daniel Altmaier, the man who had knocked out Ben Shelton in the previous round.

The week's revelation in Hamburg has a name: Ignacio Buse. The 22-year-old Peruvian is playing in the third semifinal of his young career after upsetting Jakub Mensik and then Ugo Humbert in the quarterfinals. Trailing 0-3 in the third set against the Frenchman, Buse won six consecutive games to seal his place. His live ranking now hovers near the top 40, a career high. He will face Aleksandar Kovacevic, who produced an equally surprising run after eliminating Félix Auger-Aliassime.

In Strasbourg, the WTA semifinals are scheduled for Saturday. Victoria Mboko will take on Jaqueline Cristian, while Emma Navarro faces Ann Li in an all-American showdown. Mboko, just 19, continues to impress following her victory over Leylah Fernandez in the all-Canadian quarterfinal.

These final matches before Roland-Garros will serve as a barometer. For Ruud and De Minaur, a title would be the ideal launchpad. For Tien and Buse, every additional win fuels a confidence that could carry real weight on Parisian clay.
