Musetti Out of Roland-Garros as Injury Nightmare Continues

Lorenzo Musetti will not defend his semifinal run at Roland-Garros. The 24-year-old Italian announced his withdrawal after medical tests confirmed a rectus femoris injury in his left leg, sustained during his round of 16 match against Casper Ruud at the Italian Open on May 12.

"After the match, I underwent medical examinations which revealed a rectus femoris injury, requiring several weeks of rest and recovery," Musetti wrote on Instagram. The Tuscan admitted he had been playing "on one leg" from the second game of his defeat to the Norwegian in Rome.

Musetti''s 2026 season has become an unrelenting nightmare. In January, he retired from the Australian Open quarterfinals while leading Novak Djokovic two sets to love due to a psoas tear. After returning at Indian Wells in March, he pulled out of Miami with a right arm issue. A first-round exit in Monte-Carlo, a quarterfinal in Barcelona, a round of 16 in Madrid, and now this fresh injury in Rome: the downward spiral shows no signs of stopping.

The ranking damage is severe. Musetti stands to lose 1,100 ATP points over the coming weeks, between the defence of his Paris semifinal (800 points) and his Rome semifinal (300 points). Currently inside the top 10, he is expected to slide beyond 15th in the world by mid-June.

His participation at Wimbledon in late June is also in jeopardy. The estimated recovery time of several weeks casts serious doubt over the remainder of his grass court campaign. After a 2025 season that cemented his place among the elite, Musetti is watching 2026 crumble under the weight of repeated injuries.
