Thursday on clay: quarterfinal lineups take shape across three cities

Thursday's action completed the quarterfinal picture across three concurrent clay-court tournaments. From Barcelona to Stuttgart via Munich, the day delivered both confirmations and surprises.

In Barcelona, the draw took an unexpected turn following Carlos Alcaraz's withdrawal. The Spaniard, who has been nursing a right wrist issue since his first-round match against Virtanen, accepted the inevitable after medical tests revealed a more serious injury than initially feared. His absence reshuffles the top half entirely, where Tomas Machac will face Andrey Rublev in a quarterfinal that promises intensity. In the bottom half, Lorenzo Musetti, the second seed, will take on Arthur Fils, the Frenchman who saved match points in the previous round.

The story of the day belongs to Rafael Jodar. The 18-year-old Spaniard, a wild card entry, dispatched Ugo Carabelli 6-3, 6-3 to earn a quarterfinal date with Cameron Norrie. He becomes the third Spanish teenager to reach the last eight in Barcelona after Nadal and Alcaraz, writing his own chapter in the tournament's storied history. Qualifier Hamad Medjedovic, who upset third seed Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4, completes a wide-open draw where anything feels possible.

In Munich, the BMW Open delivered its final second-round results. Ben Shelton edged past Alexander Blockx in two tight sets (6-4, 7-6), while Joao Fonseca swept aside Rinderknech 6-3, 6-2 with disarming ease. Their quarterfinal showdown on Friday will pit two of the most exciting young talents against each other. Alexander Zverev, the home favorite, will face Francisco Cerundolo, while Flavio Cobolli meets Vit Kopriva on the other side.

In Stuttgart, the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix saw the favorites hold firm. Coco Gauff rallied past Samsonova after a shaky start, Elena Rybakina cruised through, and Iga Swiatek made a convincing start under new coach Francisco Roig. Leylah Fernandez produced the day's most dramatic moment, saving match points to scrape into the last eight.

The European clay-court season is in full swing, and Friday shapes up as one of the most loaded days of the year.
