Badosa Hospitalized, Withdraws from Toronto and Cincinnati: US Open in Doubt

Paula Badosa has withdrawn from the Canadian Open in Toronto and the Cincinnati Open, the two Masters 1000 hard-court events on the North American swing. The 28-year-old Spaniard, a former world number two, posted photos from a hospital on Instagram showing her with an IV drip in her arm, without specifying the exact nature of the procedure. Her participation in the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season starting August 30, remains uncertain.

A torn labrum in her left hip

Badosa is dealing with a torn labrum in her left hip, a separate issue from the chronic back problems that disrupted her career in 2023 and 2024. The Spaniard revealed she first felt the pain in February, weeks after returning to the top 10. The tear worsened around Wimbledon and has caused daily pain since. Badosa has opted against surgery for now, choosing injections to manage the pain and preserve a chance of competing in the months ahead.

Silent on court since Hamburg

Badosa has not played a match since July 24, when she lost in the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 in Hamburg to Mayar Sherif. Her withdrawal from Toronto and then Cincinnati deprives the American swing of a player capable of troubling the top of the draw when healthy. In 2026, Badosa enjoyed strong moments, notably a return to the top 10 early in the season, before the hip injury stalled her progress.

The US Open hangs in the balance

Badosa remains on the US Open entry list. No official announcement has been made regarding a potential withdrawal. The hospital photos could correspond to a hip injection or preparatory treatment ahead of Flushing Meadows. Her team has indicated the procedure was not serious, but the sequence of withdrawals and the silence surrounding her condition continue to fuel concern. If Badosa pulls out of the US Open, her 2026 season could be reduced to a handful of events, a scenario the Spaniard desperately hopes to avoid. At 28, Badosa has the talent and the ranking history to compete at the highest level, but the accumulation of injuries threatens to derail a career that promised so much after her breakthrough run to the top two in 2022.
