Eala Makes History as First Filipino WTA Champion in Washington

Alexandra Eala captured her first WTA title at the Mubadela DC Open, defeating Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the final. At 20 years old, the Filipino became the first player from her country to lift a trophy on the WTA Tour, a historic moment for Asian tennis.

A draw worthy of a champion

The path to the title was anything but straightforward. Eala defeated 2024 Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, then seventh seed Leylah Fernandez, the defending Washington champion. In the quarterfinals, she dismissed second seed Elina Svitolina. In the semifinals, Naomi Osaka, the third seed, fell to the young Filipino's determination. The run was crowned by a victory over Pegula, the top seed and top-10 player.

The match that proved her maturity

The final was suspended Sunday evening due to rain with Pegula leading 6-4, 2-1. When the match resumed Monday, Eala found the mental resources to completely reverse the momentum. She won the final nine games of the encounter, including a dominant 6-0 third set in which she conceded only eight points. "At the beginning of the week, there is no way I would have thought that I would be holding this trophy," she said after the victory. On regrouping after the rain delay, she added: "I was able to take my time and apply learnings from the first half of the match."

From the Nadal Academy to the top 20

Trained at Rafael Nadal's academy in Mallorca, Eala has climbed the ranks of professional tennis with remarkable consistency. The Washington title marks her entry into the world top 20 for the first time in her career. With seven top-10 victories this season, she now sits alongside Elena Rybakina and Svitolina in that category. Her game stands out for its powerful ball-striking from both sides of the court and a fighting spirit forged at the demanding Mallorcan academy.

Already rolling in Toronto

Riding the wave of confidence, Eala wasted no time keeping the momentum going. At the Canadian Open in Toronto, she defeated American Alycia Parks 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the second round to reach the third round, where she will face Caty McNally. Coco Gauff and Osaka have both publicly praised her run, a sign that the Filipino has already earned the respect of the tour's best players.

At 20 years old, Alexandra Eala has a WTA title, a top-20 debut, and a third-round spot in Toronto within the span of ten days. Her trajectory, from junior prodigy to the summit of women's tennis, confirms the emergence of a player capable of challenging the favorites on any surface.
